1. Writing a Clerkship Rotation Guide
Here is a general outline for writing clerkship guides:
Topics to Include
Please reference as appropriate. Please note that what you submit will be edited for content, spelling, language, and accuracy before being published on this website.
Please avoid:
Topics to Include
- What you'll learn during the rotation (a broad sense of what they will learn during the rotation and how it may be useful in other rotations (e.g. internal medicine provides strong foundations in almost all other areas of medicine))
- Learning Objectives (a specific list of common conditions encountered, physical exams, investigations they have to know how to interpret, and treatment modalities they have to familiarize yourself with)
- Learning Objectives - Management/Algorithms: Protocols, or Practice Guidelines that are specific to the rotation (e.g. in orthopaedics, fracture management; or in neonatology - Coombs testing, reading chest x-rays in neonates etc., feeding calculations for neonatal ICU)
- Learning Objectives - Conditions, Concepts that are relevant/specific to the specialty you are writing about
- Learning Objectives - Clinical Skills physical examinations, procedural skills that students may encounter or master
- Attire (how to dress)
- Medical Equipment (stethoscope, pen, USB)
- Typical Schedule (daily or weekly) - areas of the hospital the specialist may be involved in
- Useful textbooks or handbooks: Try to reference the most popular or common textbook you've seen used on that rotation, or ones that you have found extremely useful.
- Helpful Resources ( links, smartphone apps, PDFs you'd like to include)
- Tidbits and Pearls: some tidbits of advice you may want to include about professionalism, attitude, and how to make the most out of the rotation.
- Interesting Cases: If you have a memorable case that "defined" that rotation for you and feels taught you something about that field of medicine - see if you can include it!

2. Submitting a PDF Reference Sheet
- Limit to 5 pages maximum (1-2 pages preferably) as these are meant to be summary sheets
- Should be your own original content
- No plagiarism
- Reference as appropriate
