Laura MacPherson is bringing a new level of medical service to the community.
The 30-year-old Sombra native is the first physician assistant (PA) to be working in Chatham-Kent having started at the Chatham-Kent Community Health Centres (C-K CHC) just over two weeks ago. MacPherson's duties will include conducting physical examinations, making diagnosis, treating illnesses, interpreting tests, developing treatment plans with the patient, counselling on preventative health care and writing prescriptions. "Basically anything a family physician would be doing, I'm an extension of them," she said. |
Story: The Bluewater Area Family Health Team has acquired not only a new doctor, but also a Physician Assistant. Dr. Alicia Schreader and Susanne Schoeley, have joined Dr. Lori Teeple and Dr. Michael Hurley in this multi-service facility. Both Dr. Schreader and Schoeley are graduates of McMaster University.
Schoeley is a graduate of the McMaster University, Physician Assistant (PA) program. She is also a graduate of North Lambton Secondary school in Forest and grew up in Thedford and is thrilled to have been able to secure a job close to home. |
Susi Schoeley knew she wanted to work in medicine, but nursing didn't appeal to her and becoming a doctor would require too much of a time commitment, both for earning her credentials and after entering the workforce.
So when she heard about a program to train practitioners who seemed to bridge the gap between the other two disciplines, she jumped at the chance. Schoeley is on her way to becoming a physician assistant, or PA, a relatively unknown type of health-care provider in Canada, but one that has been steadily growing in numbers over the last four decades south of the border. |

One of 45 students enrolled in McMaster University's physician assistant education program - the first of its kind in Ontario and one of only three in Canada - the 24-year-old is preparing to become a doctor's right-hand man, as it were.
